1 Kings 19

(CLV) 1 Kings 19

1 And Ahab declares to Jezebel all that Elijah did, and all how he slew all the prophets by the sword, 2 and Jezebel sends a messenger unto Elijah, saying, "Thus does the elohims, and thus do they add, surely about this time to-morrow, I make your life as the life of one of them." 3 And he fears, and rises, and goes for his life, and comes in to Beer-Sheba, that [is] Judah's, and leaves his young man there, 4 and he himself has gone into the wilderness a day's Journey, and comes and sits under a certain retem-tree, and desires his soul to die, and said, "Enough, now, O Yahweh, take my soul, for I [am] not better than my fathers." 5 And he lies down and sleeps under a certain retem-tree, and lo, a messenger comes against him, and said to him, "Rise, eat"; 6 and he looks attentively, and lo, at his bolster a cake [baken on] burning stones, and a dish of water, and he eats, and drinks, and turns, and lies down. 7 And the messenger of Yahweh turns back a second time, and comes against him, and said, "Rise, eat, for the way is too great for you"; 8 and he rises, and eats, and drinks, and goes in the power of that food forty days and forty nights, unto the mount of Elohim - Horeb. 9 And he comes in there, unto the cave, and lodges there, and lo, the word of Yahweh [is] unto him, and said to him, "What - to you, here, Elijah?" 10 And he said, "I have been very zealous for Yahweh, Elohim of Hosts, for the sons of Israel have forsaken Your covenant - Your altars they have thrown down, and Your prophets they have slain by the sword, and I am left, I, by myself, and they seek my life - to take it." 11 And He said, "Go out, and you have stood in the mount before Yahweh." And lo, Yahweh is passing by, and a wind -- great and strong - is rending mountains, and shivering rocks before Yahweh: not in the wind [is] Yahweh; and after the wind a shaking: not in the shaking [is] Yahweh; 12 and after the shaking a fire: not in the fire [is] Yahweh; and after the fire a voice still small; 13 and it comes to pass, at Elijah's hearing [it], that he wraps his face in his robe, and goes out, and stands at the opening of the cave, and lo, unto him [is] a voice, and it said, "What - to you, here, Elijah?" 14 And he said, "I have been very zealous for Yahweh, Elohim of Hosts; for the sons of Israel have forsaken Your covenant, Your altars they have thrown down, and Your prophets they have slain by the sword, and I am left, I, by myself, and they seek my life - to take it." 15 And Yahweh said unto him, "Go turn back on your way to the wilderness of Damascus, and you have gone in, and anointed Hazael for king over Aram, 16 and Jehu son of Nimshi you do anoint for king over Israel, and Elisha son of Shaphat, of Abel-Meholah, you do anoint for prophet in your stead. 17 And it has been, him who is escaped from the sword of Hazael, put to death does Jehu, and him who is escaped from the sword of Jehu put to death does Elisha; 18 and I have left in Israel seven thousand, all the knees that have not bowed to Baal, and every mouth that has not kissed him." 19 And he goes thence, and finds Elisha son of Shaphat, and he is plowing; twelve yoke [are] before him, and he [is] with the twelfth; and Elijah passes over unto him, and casts his robe upon him, 20 and he forsakes the oxen, and runs after Elijah, and said, "Let me give a kiss, I pray you, to my father and to my mother, and I go after you." And he said to him, "Go, turn back, for what have I done to you?" 21 And he turns back from after him, and takes the yoke of oxen, and sacrifices it, and with instruments of the oxen he has boiled their flesh, and gives to the people, and they eat, and he rises, and goes after Elijah, and serves him.
